We look connected on my partner's app, but not on mine

If one of you appears connected and the other still sees "Invite your partner", or an invite link or 6-digit code keeps failing, one phone is signed in to the wrong Cupla account. Here's how to fix it.

Sometimes one of you appears connected while the other still sees Invite your partner. This almost always means one of you is signed in to a different Cupla account from the one your partner is connected to — it often happens after getting a new phone, or after accidentally creating a second account.

The same thing shows up in other ways: the invite link says failed when your partner opens it, the 6-digit code is not accepted, or your partner can still see your calendar while your app says you are not connected. All three mean the two of you are already connected — through a different account of yours — and sending another invite will not change it.

If the two of you only connected today, go straight to Step 3. A connection made during someone's very first setup can land on a spare account their phone created along the way, and nobody can open that account again. The partner who shows as connected needs to disconnect and send a fresh invite. Nothing is lost by doing it, because you have not shared anything yet.

Step 1: Work out which side is wrong

On each phone, open the menu — the menu icon (☰) at the top, or the More tab at the bottom of the screen — and look at the tiles at the top.

  • If the tile asks you to invite — Invite your partner to Cupla, or the same with their name in place of "your partner" — that phone is signed in to an account with no connection. Their name appearing there is not a sign you are connected: it is the one you typed when you set Cupla up.

  • If your partner appears with no invite prompt, that phone is connected.

Only the phone that shows no connection should log out. The partner whose app shows you connected, with no invite prompt, is already in the right account — logging them out, reinstalling, or starting a new account will not help, and it lands them back where they started.

Step 2: If your phone shows no connection

You are probably signed in to a new, empty account. Sign back in to your original one.

If the Cupla app on this phone is showing your data, do not log out. Signing back in does not always return you to the same account, whichever phone you are on. An email address that already belongs to another Cupla account opens that account instead of yours, and anything you set up in the meantime, including a partner connection, is left behind. Message our support team from the app first and we will make sure your login is attached to your account.

If this phone's Cupla is already empty, log out and sign back in:

  1. Tap the menu icon (☰), or the More tab at the bottom of the screen.

  2. Tap Me.

  3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Log Out.

  4. Log back in using the method you originally used — email, Apple, Google, Facebook, or Passkey.

If you are not sure which method you used, and your partner is on an iPhone, they can send you a login link from their app: they tap the menu icon (☰), or the More tab at the bottom of their screen, tap your name, then tap Share login link. Open that link on your phone with Cupla installed and it will sign you in to the correct account. The option is iPhone to iPhone only: it appears when you and your partner are both on iPhones and your account already has an email address on it.

Either of you can also just read the address off the profile: on the phone that is still connected, tap the menu icon (☰), or the More tab at the bottom of the screen, tap your partner's name, and their Cupla address is shown on their profile. Sign in with that address, or with the Google or Apple account that uses it. If you have more than one Google account, it is often not the one you use every day.

If your partner is on Android, or they cannot see the option, do not keep trying other sign-in methods. Message our support team from the app instead and we will put your login back on your original account.

Step 3: If your partner is connected to your old account

If you have created a brand-new account and want to keep using it, your partner needs to disconnect from your old account and then connect with you again. See How do I disconnect from my partner? followed by How do I sync with my partner?

If your partner's app shows your profile almost empty, with just a first name and dashes against the other fields, that account was created by your own phone during a setup attempt. It holds nothing and nobody can sign in to it again, so the note below about losing shared data does not apply to you. Your partner disconnects, you get back into your original account using Step 2, and then you send them a fresh invite.

Please note that disconnecting permanently deletes the data you shared with the old account. If you would rather keep your history, use Step 2 to get back into your original account instead.

If you are still stuck, message our support team from the app and we will get you connected.
